* Some of the league's marquee matchups including Bengals at Chiefs, Jets at Cowboys, Bills at Chiefs highlight television's most watched timeslot
* CBS Sports' schedule features star quarterbacks playing in the AFC, including Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City), Joe Burrow (Cincinnati), Aaron Rodgers (NY Jets), Josh Allen (Buffalo) & Lamar Jackson (Baltimore)
* Super Bowl LVII champion Chiefs to play at least 8 CBS games, more than double than any other network
* Multiple national game window appearances by Cowboys, Bills, Bengals, Eagles and Jets
CBS Sports has officially announced their schedule for the upcoming 2023 NFL season. CBS begins their 64th season of covering National Football League games. CBS' 2023 NFL schedule is highlighted by exclusive coverage of Super Bowl LVIII from Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, February 11, 2024. Super Bowl LVIII will mark the 22nd time that CBS will televise the league's championship game, the most of any network.
The 2023 regular season slate on CBS, with more than 100 games during the 18 week regular season, is headlined by highly anticipated matchups in the Sunday 4:25 PM (ET) national doubleheader window, the most-watched window in all of television. A brief sampling of featured late games include the AFC Championship between Cincinnati and Kansas City in Week 17, the Jets visiting the Cowboys in Week 2, Buffalo at Kansas City in Week 14, and Philadelphia hosting Buffalo during Week 12 (Thanksgiving weekend).
Last year's Super Bowl champion, the Kansas City Chiefs, have at least eight CBS games scheduled during the regular season. This number is more than double than any other network. The Chiefs have six in the coveted 4:25 PM ET window alongside their Christmas Day game (1:00 PM ET) vs. the Raiders. Among the teams pegged for the national NFL on CBS doubleheader games are the Cowboys, Bills, Bengals and Jets. Plus, the 2023 schedule includes an enlarged NFC slate with multiple games featuring the Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, Bears, Packers and 49ers.
The NFL on CBS will continue to serve as the primary home for the American Football Conference (AFC), which contains a star-studded group of signal callers, including Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs), Josh Allen (Bills), Joe Burrow (Bengals), Lamar Jackson (Ravens), Justin Herbert (Chargers), Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars), Aaron Rodgers (Jets), in addition to two top-five draft picks at QB: Houston's C.J. Stroud and Indianapolis' Anthony Richardson.
Additionally, the NFL on CBS will feature divisional rivalry games on Thanksgiving (Commanders vs. Cowboys) and Christmas (Raiders vs. Chiefs) as well as a full postseason slate, including the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl LVIII.
The NFL on CBS' 2023 regular season schedule begins on Sunday, September 10 with a national doubleheader. CBS will have 10 doubleheader slots (4:25 PM, ET) throughout the year. The 2023 schedule is bookended with doubleheaders at the start and end of the year (Week 1 & Week 2; Week 17 & Week 18). The Week 1 CBS doubleheader game at 4:25 PM ET is a re-match of Super Bowls XXXIX and LII as DeVonta Smith and the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles face Kendrick Bourne and the New England Patriots. The Patriots plan on honoring legendary quarterback Tom Brady on that day.
This year's doubleheader window is spotlighted by the re-match of the last two AFC Championship games in Week 17 (Bengals vs. Chiefs). Also, keep in mind that CBS also has other important games at the 4:25 PM time slot -- Jets at Cowboys (Week 2), Bengals at 49ers (Week 8), Jets at Bills (Week 11), Bills at Eagles (Week 12) & Bills at Chiefs (Week 14).
CBS will celebrate the holidays by presenting games on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
CBS will be the home of the Thanksgiving Day game between the Washington Commanders and the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, November 23 at 4:30 PM (ET).
On Christmas Day, Monday, December 25, CBS Sports and Nickelodeon will team up to deliver a special Christmas gift to football fans of all ages as Davante Adams and the Las Vegas Raiders visit Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs at 1:00 PM (ET). In addition to the traditional CBS broadcast, Nickelodeon will air an NFL game for the fourth straight season.
CBS' NFL coverage will be once again be led by the #1 broadcast team of Jim Nantz (play-by-play), Tony Romo (analyst) & Tracy Wolfson (reporter), as this trio will call CBS' biggest games of the year, including Super Bowl LVIII. The network has more than 100+ games on the docket, including 18 weeks of regular season action, a Wild Card playoff game (Saturday, January 13 or Sunday, January 14), a Divisional playoff game (Saturday, January 20 or Sunday, January 21), the AFC Championship (Sunday, January 28) and Super Bowl LVIII from Las Vegas (Sunday, February 11).
CBS will also have one preseason game with the Lions visiting the Panthers on Friday, August 25 at 8:00 PM (ET).
Keep in mind, folks, that Greg Gumbel will no longer be calling NFL games after doing so for the past 25 years on CBS (Gumbel, however, will remain with CBS Sports as a studio host for college basketball). Gumbel will be replaced by Chris Lewis.
NOTE: As a side note, I am starting up a weekly broadcast and market listings report! Beginning in Week 3, I will post weekly articles showcasing the weekly broadcast information and which markets are set to receive which games, so y'all can plan your football Sundays.

Tamir, is someone going to be joining Nantz, Romo and Wolfson for SB LVIII? (Like Evan Washburn, Jay Feely, etc.)
ReplyDelete@Mark T. I am not sure yet. Typically, Washburn and Feely work playoff games with Nantz, Romo & Wolfson. Assuming maybe CBS uses Evan Washburn as a second sideline reporter for the Super Bowl.
DeleteVery interesting.
DeleteEspecially since Ian Eagle might not be calling a playoff game this year.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if Scott Franzke will call Phillies games while Tom Mccarthy is doing NFL on CBS games.
ReplyDelete@Mark T. Actually, I think Scott Franzke will call some games Phillies on television this season. Last season, Scott filled in for Tom for some games towards the end of the season.
DeleteThat makes sense. I forget who filled in for Scott on radio, though?
Delete@Mark T. I think Gregg Murphy, did, I believe. Gregg has done fill-in play-by-play before. Gregg is obviously best known for being the longtime field reporter on Phillies television broadcasts (2012-around 2020).
DeleteI believe he does pregame and postgame as well on the Phillies radio.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.

Why is Tom McCarthy not calling a game next week?
ReplyDeleteWeek 3, I mean.
ReplyDelete@Mark T. Tom McCarthy is not calling a game next week because McCarthy will be calling the Mets/Phillies series, since the Phillies are playing for a spot in the playoffs. And obviously, McCarthy is primary local Phillies TV announcer, so he kinda has to be there towards the end of the season (especially if the Phillies clinch a Wild Card berth at some point; you kinda need to have that time freed up).
ReplyDeleteGood point. He did that last year, right? Is that why Andrew Catalon worked with Tiki Barber in Week 4?
ReplyDelete@Mark T. Yup, CBS had to shift a few announcers around that week.
ReplyDeleteHmm.

Always annoys me whenever Philadelphia gets the late game that's irrelevant to the Eagles.
ReplyDelete@Mark T. Mark, I totally agree with you. This Raiders-Chargers game means NOTHING to the Eagles, whatsoever. But, the thing is due to the Eagles hosting a 1 p.m. ET game on FOX (WTXF-TV, ch. 29), CBS (KYW-TV, ch. 3) MUST show a late game by default, which is Raiders/Chargers. I wish Panthers/Seahawks was this week instead of last week, because that has MORE importance for the Eagles since that is a NFC matchup.
ReplyDeleteTrue. I feel as though a late NFC match-up would be OK with, but that's what FOX is for due to them being the NFC's channel.

@Mark T. Unfortunately, Mark, the Giants-Bills game next weekend can't be flexed out, despite all of us wanting to keep our sanity following three pretty lousy showings from the Giants in primetime thus far.
DeleteThere are a LOT of options for SNF next weekend, like Colts/Jaguars as you mentioned. Yeah, NBC can't get themselves out of another potential bloodbath in Giants-Bills.
That sucks.
DeleteWhy are Nantz/Romo/Wolfson calling a late game next week? What's up with everyone sending their top teams to late single header games?
ReplyDelete@Mark T. Mark, Jim, Tony & Tracy are calling a late game next week because this serves as the Super Bowl "dry run" game. Remember, CBS is airing the Super Bowl this season from Las Vegas, and it is important to have the crew calling the big game get at least one game in from the Super Bowl venue.
DeleteI know. The second straight week that the network's lead announcing team is calling a 4:05 p.m. (ET) game, instead of a 1 p.m. (ET) game. (Burkhardt/Olsen on PHI/LAR this week, and Nantz/Romo on NE/LV next week).

Awesome! I Actually Wonder If Ian Eagle Is a Fan Of The Patriots. Because I Feel Like He Goes To Gillette Stadium More Than Every Other Announcer.
ReplyDelete@KMAJ That's a good point. If Jim Nantz doesn't go to Gillette, it always seems like Eagle does. During the Brady years, CBS would always send one of the two to a Patriots game because they drew the most ratings.
DeleteSo Who's Your Favorite CBS Announcer? Mine's Andrew Catalon And Ian Eagle.
Delete@KMAJ Probably Kevin Harlan. He's had a lot of legendary calls over the years and he's also great with the NBA and March Madness.
DeleteI Was Going To Say That Too! I Wonder Who's Tamir's Favorite CBS Announcer.
Delete@KMAJ Well, my favorite CBS announcer is Kevin Harlan, just like Mark said. Kevin has this exciting voice that grabs your attention. Harlan's ability to speak fast and still describe the action with sharp accuracy is simply remarkable. Plus, Kevin Harlan definitely works well with his analyst, Trent Green.
DeleteMy second favorite CBS announcer is Andrew Catalon. This dude has worked his way up the CBS announcing stable, and now he is calling some very important games for the network. Andrew might be the lead CBS' NFL announcer one day when Jim Nantz calls it a career.
And It's Funny Because When I Saw Andrew Catalon Announced A Pats Game In 2019 Against The Bengals, I Was Like, No Way!

I was so close!
DeleteI'm guessing they put Nantz, Romo and Wolfson in a late game because it was more interesting than anything in the early slate.
ReplyDeleteI hear that the Vikings-Broncos won't be flexed out of SNF on 11/19. Unbelievable. Why the hell aren't they flexing any games out this year?
ReplyDelete@Mark T. I know, Mark. I am pretty PISSED the hell off that about that. Yes, you are right. Minnesota-Denver will stay on Sunday Night Football for November 19. It's crazy how much NBC has been completely screwed over this season in terms of the flex scheduling. Mark, I think there is a new flex scheduling rule this year saying that NBC can only flex TWO games out of SNF between Weeks 5-10, and ANY game out of SNF from Week 11 on. And obviously, NBC has FLEXED OUT of any game. The reason is that CBS and FOX are pretty much shutting the door on NBC in terms of getting better games to safeguard their national games. But, c'mon. CAN YOU LET NBC HAVE A BETTER GAME?! Jets-Raiders. Vikings-Broncos. Bears-Chargers. Three snooze fest games. However, Ravens/Chargers isn't too bad because the Chargers won on Monday night against the Jets (albeit imo, the Chargers offense isn't too good right now).
Delete* NBC has not FLEXED OUT, sorry
DeleteYeah. Bills-Bengals was a pretty good game, too. I'm pretty excited for the Eagles-Cowboys game on 12/10, I believe?
Delete@Mark T. Yes, you are correct, Mark! And that game will mean something for the Eagles, especially considering the fact that they have a really demanding schedule coming up (Kansas City, Buffalo and San Francisco) before the second Dallas game on Sunday night in early December.
DeleteThis will be a crucial game.
DeleteWho would've thought that Minnesota-Denver would actually look like a decent game? Both teams are red-hot.
Delete@Mark T. Man, you are so right. NBC got 🤞🏽 lucky with this one, and this game actually means something for the playoff picture 📊.

So Which Predictions Did I Get Right And Which Ones Did I Get Wrong? And How Come Jim, Tony And Tracy Are Not On The Week 13 Schedule?
ReplyDelete@KMAJ Unfortunately, you get none of the predictions right. Nantz, Romo & Wolfson were given a bye week by CBS for Week 13 and it kinda makes sense because CBS' schedule is pretty bad next weekend.
DeleteInteresting for CBS to give Nantz/Romo/Wolfson the bye, and McCarthy and his team (likely) back to back games for the first time since the first two weeks of the season.
ReplyDeleteFor Patriots And Bills Rematch, Ian Eagle Will Most Likely Call That One Because I Feel Like He's a Patriots Fan. Do You Agree?
ReplyDelete@KMAJ Nah, I don't think so. I think Ian Eagle will call Bengals/Chiefs instead, because CBS will likely move the Dolphins/Ravens game at 4:25 PM (ET) and re-assign Bengals/Chiefs to the early 1:00 PM (ET), and let's be honest, the Patriots are basically DONE for the season. The Patriots/Bills game will likely get Harlan/Green or Catalon/Barber/Ryan in the worst case scenario.
DeleteIt was just revealed that Rodgers has his set return date for Dec 24 against WSH. This would put the NFL in a weird spot because this game is behind CLE HOU in the noon slot and both teams are likely eliminated by this point. With this in mind here's what I think happens in Week 16 with this information:
ReplyDelete- NFL won't want to change Christmas day games or Saturday Dec 23 games and they can't change TNF because of 28 day period so change has to come in Sunday's current slate
- This leaves NE DEN (because of NE's 2-8 record) to be flexed out of the NFLN night cast for WSH NYJ despite the NFL not liking to flex Christmas weekend games just because of the ratings Rodgers miraculous comeback will draw.
- Updated CBS Predictions with this:
Noon:
CLE HOU- Ian Eagle
JAX TB (Flexed from 4:05 because of NE DEN)- Andrew Catalon
SEA TEN- Spero Dedes
NE DEN- Kevin Harlan
WSH NYJ- Rich Eisen (Also perfect because Eisen is diehard Jets fan and will get to call Rodgers first actual Jets start with this)
Let me know y'all's thoughts on this

. PIT at IND: Rich Eisen, Kurt Warner, Michael Irvin, Steve Mariucci (they could use just Eisen/Warner or Eisen/Jason McCourty for this spot), Sara Walsh & Stacey Dales (NFL Network crew)
. DEN at DET: Kevin Kugler, Mark Sanchez & Laura Okmin (crew from FOX)
I think CBS and FOX will lend one crew each, and the Rich Eisen team will call the one game withstanding.
Yeah, I agree. Curious to see what the Rich Eisen crew will be.
DeleteWhere'd you find the Nickelodeon announcers?

Delete@Mark T. Mark, I found the Nickelodeon announcers out by reading this tweet from Awful Announcing Associate Editor, Ken Fang.
My Week 15 "NFL on CBS" predictions (Sunday, Dec. 17):
ReplyDelete1:00 PM, ET:
. Tampa Bay @ Green Bay: Nantz/Romo//Wolfson
. NY Jets @ Miami: Harlan/Green//Collins
. Houston @ Tennessee: McCarthy/Lofton/Feely//Blackmon or Guerra
4:05 PM, ET:
. San Francisco @ Arizona (LATE): Eagle/Davis//Washburn
. Washington @ LA Rams (LATE): Dedes/Archuleta//Renner or Kinkhabwala
Catalon/Barber/Ryan//Ross will be loaned over to NFL Network to call MIN/CIN Saturday afternoon.
Let me know what you think.
I think it's good. The slate for Week 15 is pretty lackluster, so it's not easy to predict.
DeleteEvan Washburn and Jay Feely will be joining Nantz/Romo/Wolfson for Super Bowl LVIII.
ReplyDeleteWeek 15 announcers per Shlomo Sprung
ReplyDelete-
*Kevin Harlan will likely call a Saturday game
-
Jets Dolphins Jim Nantz Tony Romo Tracy Wolfson
Buccaneers Packers Andrew Catalon Tiki Barber Matt Ryan AJ Ross
Texans Titans Spero Dedes Adam Archuleta Aditi Kinkhabwala
4:05
49ers Cardinals Ian Eagle Charles Davis Evan Washburn
Commanders Rams Tom McCarthy James Lofton Jay Feely Tiffany Blackmon
I'm guessing because Kevin Harlan isn't on the list of CBS's lineup for this week, that he's gonna call an NFL Network game.
ReplyDeleteNFL on CBS predictions for Week 17
ReplyDeleteCIN/KC flexed to 1pm; MIA/BAL to 4:25
CIN/KC- Eagle/Davis/Washburn
LV/IND- Harlan/Green/Collins
ATL/CHI- Dedes/Archuleta/Kinkhabwala
NE/BUF- McCarthy/Lofton/Feely/Blackmon
CAR/JAX- Lewis/Tucker/McCourty/Guerra
MIA/BAL- Nantz/Romo/Wolfson
LAC/DEN- Catalon/Barber/Ryan/Ross
I actually think they'll keep CIN/KC in the 4:25 spot while MIA/BAL stays at 1pm. So just flip Eagle/Davis/Washburn and Nantz/Romo/Wolfson and you've got my new prediction.

I feel like if the Bills-Dolphins game isn't for the division, then it won't be on SNF because you know how NBC loves the winner-take-all games.
DeleteI totally agree with your point that yes the NFL will not put this game on SNF if the division is already decided. However it's hard for me to see a world where this game does not decide the AFC East because Buffalo has two very easy games against a checked-out Chargers and an awful Pats team that they want to avenge from week 7. Plus MIA has to win both of their next 2 to avoid this scenario and the have DAL and BAL (this is because of BUF's dominant Week 4 win). Plus not only could BUF MIA decide the division but it could decide playoff fates for Buffalo and possibly Miami depending on what else happens in the AFC before.
DeleteYou Know Mark For SNF, I Would Predict ATL@NO. Because SNF Does NFC At The End Of Week 18.
DeleteI see where you are coming from, Neal. And KMAJ, that's not entirely true. Yes, most of the last SNF games are NFC, but in 2021, the Week 18 SNF game was an AFC matchup (Chargers vs Raiders)
DeleteWhy'd you erase the TMNT characters for the Christmas game?

@Mark T. Thank you, man! Happy New Year to you by the way! Thank you so much for your help!
DeleteYou're welcome. Thanks for the kind words! Happy New Year to you too!
DeleteIs it just gonna be Nantz, Romo and Wolfson for the playoff games, or will Jay Feely be joining?
ReplyDelete@Mark T. In fact, Jay Feely will indeed be joining Nantz/Romo/Wolfson once again for the postseason. Nantz, Romo, Wolfson & Feely will be on the Steelers/Bills Wild Card game next Sunday, per a tweet made by CBS Sports late this evening.
DeleteNeat!
DeleteWho are the "special guests" for Nickelodeon's Super Bowl broadcast?
ReplyDelete@Mark T. The "special guests" are basically the cast of SpongeBob: SpongeBob, Patrick, Larry the Lobster, Sandy Cheeks, plus Boots & Dora the Explorer.
DeleteA "SpongeBob" themed Super Bowl broadcast.
Nickelodeon is definitely getting creative with their first Super Bowl broadcast.
Creative indeed. I wonder if Patrick will do something like he did to Russell Wilson last year.
DeleteThe Steelers-Bills game has been moved to Monday at 4:30 pm e.t.
