Thursday Night Football kicks off on Thursday, October 8th featuring Buccaneers at Bears
FOX Sports announced their 2020 NFL regular season schedule on Thursday night. As part of FOX's schedule this year, they have Thursday Night Football presented by Bud Light, marquee matchups & several telecasts that hope to provide valuable entertainment throughout the season.
The NFL on FOX is back for the 27th straight season of NFL coverage.

America's Game of the Week, the No. 1 show on television for 11 straight seasons (2009-2019), will again kick off the NFL on FOX season. This Week 1 showdown will be between two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks as Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September 13th at 4:25 PM ET on FOX.
The NFL on FOX schedule for the 2020 season is highlighted by at least (minimum) 98 Sunday afternoon contests. This includes nine (9) editions of America's Game of the Week. FOX will televise more regular season games than any other network, with at least (minimum) 109 matchups throughout the year.
The Saints lead with 11 appearances. The Cowboys, Packers & 49ers will appear 10 times each. The Buccaneers will appear 9 times.
FOX's 2020 schedule is filled with with appearances by the league's elite quarterbacks like Tom Brady (TB), Russell Wilson (SEA), Aaron Rodgers (GB), Jimmy Garoppolo (SF), Super Bowl LIV MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes (KC) & 2019 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson (BAL).
America's Game of the Week features many Hall of Fame Game contests throughout the season, including a Week 6 late afternoon contest between Rodgers' Packers and Brady's Buccaneers in Tampa on Sunday, October 18th.
Additional key matchups on the America's Game of the Week package include:
- Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks (Week 3)
- San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints (Week 10)
- Dallas Cowboys at Minnesota Vikings (Week 11)
- Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys (Week 16)
Thursday Night Football on FOX begins on Thursday, October 8th at 8:20 PM ET as Tom Brady's Buccaneers head to Solder Field take on the Bears on FOX, FOX Deportes and Amazon Prime (with NFL Network simlucast). The Thursday Night schedule begins in Week 2 with three (3) exclusive NFL Network games.

The NFL on FOX continues its Thanksgiving Day tradition with a NFC East showdown as the Redskins play the Cowboys in Arlington on Thursday, November 26th at 4:30 PM ET during Week 12 action.
FOX Sports' playoff coverage features one (1) NFC Wild Card on Saturday, Jan. 9 or Saturday, Jan. 10. Two (2) NFC Divisional Playoff games on Saturday, Jan. 16 and/or Sunday, Jan. 17. Finally, the presentation of the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 24th at 3:00 PM ET.

I put the Brennaman/Spielman crew on ARI/SF because of SF's NFC Championship from last year
I put the Myers/Johnston crew on SEA/ATL due to POE
Yeah, I know, the Stockton/Schlereth crew did PLENTY of West Coast games due to Stockton's (Arizona) and Schlereth's residences (Denver) on the West Coast, but CHI/DET is the weakest of Fox's opening week 6 game slate. That's why they are there.

Tanir Moore, Any guess on who you think Kevin Burkhardt's new broadcast partner will be?
ReplyDeleteMy guess is maybe FOX will put Daryl Johnston in that role since he's use to be on the higher announce team when he first started working for FOX.
My 2nd guess will be Kurt Warner. Hes highly respected around the league. He's called games for FOX before. He calls games for Westwood one Radio with Kevin Harlan and has called games for NFL Network. He'll work well with Kevin Burkhardt.
My 3rd guess which would be a long shot and that's Dan Fouts. The following season I think it will be Greg Olsen. He's worked with Burkhardt 2 seasons ago on his bye week calling Rams at Vikings and he did some xfl games with him as well.
djth3greatest I think that Chris Spielman will get the spot with Burkhardt. Spielman has been with FOX for several years now, working with Dick Stockton and most recently, Thom Brennaman.

So, Ronde Barber is OUT at Fox. Another analyst spot is now open.
And, I believe that Daryl Johnston's contract is up at Fox as well. So, look out.

My feelings on what Fox's announcer pairings should look like this year:

7) mainly Adam Amin (though Fox always utilizes a plethora of guys here) at pbp.
I realize this won't happen but if I were in charge (and had to do something reasonable: ie, you still have to keep certain people around) I would do it this way.
-I think Brennaman and Spielman would be good at #2 for a year. Kevin Burkhardt has rightly been Fox's number 2 guy but I think Brennaman and Spielman deserve a good year. Plus they work well together and you have to take chemistry into consideration.
-Burkhardt is so great at what he does I would not want him to slide down under the 3 spot. Schlereth seems good by my judgement and Fox basically treated him amd Stockton like their nunber 3 crew from weeks 3-10 or so last year; Schlereth is clearly on the rise for them.
-Chris and Daryl seem to work well together and since they have already called games for 3 years they have chemistry together. I would give them a bone this year.
-I realize Fox will not put Albert and Vilma this low for the year but since they have not worked together and Vilma has never called an NFL game yet (even though he is not truly a broadcasting rookie) I personally would place them here. I often feel new teams should earn their stripes. The last three years Fox never seemed to treat Albert and Barber like their actual number 3 crew. It seems networks tend to have their top 6 announcers *usually* paired up with the same person for three years and I think this last year I got the sense Fox was just riding out Barber and would get rid of him. But of course in this scenario that would not happen anyway Barber and Vilma would be on the rise in the future.
-Dick Stockton gets paired up with someone new. Heck, is Dick maybe at risk for carching Covid? Fox seems to like Brady Quinn and I do, too; so if there is no college football maybe they bring him in.
-It seems Fox bringing in Adam Amin is no small deal. I figure for a year or two he may be their main number 7 guy, the main fill-in for baseball season, and perhaps Fox will substitute him in for Stockton occasionally and eventually Stockton kind of fades out like Sam Rosen has been.

Interesting to see who fills in for Brennaman for MLB postseason time; I figure that will be Kenny Albert. I wonder if Sam Rosen will still be used as a fill-in in MLB postseason season; if not, any of the previously mentioned guys could get action, and maybe you see the likes of Gus Johnson, Nick Goon, and Mike Monaco get some time in with no college football season now.

ReplyDeleteI think Brennaman and Spielman should have been higher than Albert and Vilma to begin because for one they are excellent and Vilma is new. I think Albert and Spielman would be great together because they would compliment each other well. Albert acts as a pure pbp guy and Spielman can take over and add a lot to a telecast as the analyst. Ronde Barber never seemed to be someone who can take over himself and I think that is the main reason I found Albert-Barber to be a bad crew. Albert-Spielman would be awesome together.

So I wonder with Brennaman out if maybe Chris Meyers gets pushed up and maybe Kenny Albert will be paired with Chris Spielman. Fox just got Adam Amin so maybe they use him full-time, but since he is new maybe Fox will not feel they owe him getting 16-17 games this year so they utilize Brandon Gaudin and Joe Davis at times. If Joe Davis calls games, maybe they will substitute Brady Quinn in for Jennings or whoever would origanlly be there. Fox really seems to like having Joe Davis call games and they seem to indicate he is rising high for them and still going. Without college football maybe Fox utilizes their college announcers more this year. I think using Brandon Gaudin would be smart by Fox because he struck me as a very promising talent last year and it could be a good popularity move with him as the current voice of Madden.
Well it looks like Kevin Kugler will replace Thom Brennaman. Kugler has filled in for two or three games before, at least once as a MLB postseason fill-in, and at least another time as a number 7 slotted team. I wonder who will replace him for the Sunday night radio calls? I have listened to Westwood One on Sunday nights on occasion so that does interest me.

DeleteI wonder if Fox is looking to utilize Brandon Gaudin this year. I liked what I heard from him a year ago and he seems to have big potential. If I were Fox I woukd make sure he gets in because I get the sense maybe CBS would be eyeing him (in proofreading this I wish to state there is no pun intended). But perhaps this year Gaudin gets promoted to calling Sunday night games on Westwood One radio; even so, Fox can still bring him in for some games this year as a backup/replacement announcer for MLB postseason time.

ReplyDeleteI have not seen much talk about this, but is anyone else slightly disappointed by Fox deciding to use Daryl Johnston (again) as their number 2 color guy? I just feel like that is such a bland move, especially when I think Chris Spielman would be better AND his partner got fired or suspended. I only heard Johnston on one game last year (Vikings-Packers) and he is not terrible but he is clearly not as good as he was in the mid-2000s. The move just seemed uncreative to me. Maybe Fox is planning on getting rid of him at some point and letting some newer guys in and for now they just want to give him a nice farewell before that, but Fox's number 2 team is definitely going to be taking a hit this year.

ReplyDeleteIs anyone else surprised that Amin/Schlereth are getting both of the Bucs games in weeks 2 and 3? I know Fox spoiled Stockton and Schlereth last year with some great games, so maybe this is the case. It seems like the week 2 Panthers-Bucs game should use the number 3 crew and and the week 3 Bucs-Broncos game should be the 3 or 4 crew. It seems like Fox is not giving Albert and Vilma the respect they should have (again, like how it was with Barber) in being called the number 3 crew. Even though the 49ers were the NFC representative in the super bowl, the Lions-Bears and 49ers-Jets seem like two underwhelming games to give your number 3 crew to start the season.

Rams at Bills is the second best match-up to Cowboys at Seahawks later in the day on Fox.

I for some reason find myself real curious about the week 12 matchup that will be taking place between the San Francisco 49ders and the rams. I put the Albert/Vilma crew on CIN/PIT cuz Steelers are the only remaining undefeated team this season.
I put the Kugler/Spielman crew on JAX/GB because GB is playing very well and drawing a lot of interest this season. Also, Chris Spielman resides in Canton, Ohio.
I put the Myers/Jennings/Huard crew on PHI/NYG due to POE.
I put the Amin/Schlereth crew on SEA/LA cuz they do a lot of West Coast games and Schlereth resides in Denver, Colorado.
Halfway with the Season i think FOX will have people going away like

Good chance that Greg Olsen retires after this season and joins the FOX NFL team. He would take the #2 color spot with Kevin Burkhardt and my guess is that Daryl Johnston would get sent back to #5 with Chris Myers. I can't guarantee this of course.
Delete--I think they will keep Stockton around for a bit; last year they gave him a handful of good games and wide distribution, so I figure they will keep him around if he can hold it together.
Delete--I wonder if Rosen is done. Fox has ALWAYS kept Rosen lower than Stockton and so I guess both of them got sort of demoted this last year. But the thing I keep wondering is if there is a Covid risk Rosen does not want to take so maybe it will just be this year. But I think he is basically done.
--With Brock and Greg, it really feels like Fox was just using somebody and it does not feel like either of them will have a prolonged career in the NFL, though I could see myself being wrong. Of course, Brock Huard was brought in to call college football games so I expect him to simply stay there in the future, while Greg Jennings is not someone I am real impressed by. It seems apparent that Amin and Schlereth are on the rise and Fox sees Schlereth more highly than these guys. And I think within the next few years Fox phases Myers out and he continually gets demoted, though he still has a few more good years left, I recon.
--Kevin Kugler seems like the biggest mystery to me. I figured at first this year that Fox is bringing him in to plug a hole. I like listening to him on the radio and he seems pretty good on tv, too. But lately I have began to wonder why Fox would just use him for a short time. It does not make much sense to be not be committed to him but bring him in for a full year. The only two ways I see where he does not stick around is if they decide to bring Brennaman back, which given he is not someone on the rise, my guess now is the don't. The other is if Fox is giving him a trial year and they decide they don't like him enough to be a full-timer. But I figure they already know what they are mostly getting so my guess for now is he is a keeper, but that remains to be seen.

ReplyDeleteIt's crazy that when the schedule came out for FOX this season is that the 49ers vs Saints game this season was going to be the main 4:25 pm eastern time game but with the Niners having injuries to so many good players now the Seahawks vs Rams is the main 4:25 pm eastern time game in week 10.

Deleteddawgg23 Doesn't mean they can't, but yeah; these days they never seem to call those games. I figured this would be more of a hot game: I know the 49ers have been a disappointment, but I figured Fox would want to feature the Rams because they are having a strong year. I figured the Cards-Pats game would get decent exposure but I figured not as much as it actually is. Plus, I believe Burkhardt lives in LA, so I figured Fox would maybe keep him where he is at (which networks do consider these days, like with Schlereth in Denver and Spielman in Columbus).

ReplyDeleteI think Daryl Johnston is only a place holder with Kevin Burkhardt until Greg Olsen retires and its propety why Chris Myers is paired with people like Jennings and Huard cause Fox couldn't have Matt Millen or Robert Smith do full time with Burkhardt due to College Football but if Burkhardt and Johnston gets better and Better that Olsen will team up with Kenny Albert
I could maybe see Fox continuing to use Burkhardt and Johnston together in a couple of scenarios. As far as I am aware, Olsen did not sign a contract beginning with next year; he will join Fox whenever he retires, so he could play in 2021 or beyond. The other is maybe for a year or two Fox uses a three man booth if they want Olsen to grow and not throw him to the fire. But in my mind every indication points to Fox pairing Olsen with Burkhardt and not someone else. Johnston os obviously a temporary fill-in while it seems like they are setting up Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma to be together for a while. I could see Fox sending Johnston back to being with Chris Myers because Brock Huard is there to call college games and Greg Jennings is not someone I take very seriously as an announcer.
