As NFL Playoffs Expand, CBS Adds Second Wild Card Game with a special telecast produced to air on Nickelodeon for younger audiences
CBS Sports begins their 61st season televising games of the National Football League (NFL) during the 2020 NFL season. CBS' coverage for this year is of course highlighted by their exclusive presentation of Super Bowl LV from Tampa, Fla. on February 7, 2021, marking the 21st time that CBS has broadcasted the Super Bowl - the most of any network.
The NFL on CBS 2020 lineup has plenty of star power from the American Football Conference (AFC). Obviously, Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore's Lamar Jackson (last year's NFL MVP) lead the pack. Also, Houston's Deshaun Watson, Cleveland's Baker Mayfield, Buffalo's Josh Allen and Jets quarterback Sam Darnold will also be factored into the schedule as well. Rookies Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, Joe Burrow in Cincinnati and Justin Herbert with the Chargers will be showcased on CBS this season. Tagovailoa, Burrow & Herbert were top 6 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.
CBS' Super Bowl LV season is scheduled to begin on Sunday, September 13.
Highlighting the upcoming year's broadcast schedule will be games played in the NFL's highest-rated and most-watched window every single week, 4:25 PM ET, is a matchup of Mahomes' Super Bowl Champion Chiefs against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in Week 12, in addition to, Ravens vs. Texans in Week 2, Chiefs vs. Chargers in Week 2 (the first game at SoFi Stadium for the Chargers), Patriots vs. Chiefs in Week 4, Steelers vs. Cowboys in Week 9 & Chiefs vs. Saints in Week 15.
Marquee NFC cross-flex matchups in the 4:25 PM ET window include: Giants vs. Cowboys (Week 5), 49ers vs. Patriots (Week 7) and Eagles vs. Packers (Week 13). Other CBS NFC cross-flex highlight is the Rams vs. Seahawks game in Week 16.
CBS' annual Thanksgiving day contest will pit the Houston Texans against the Detroit Lions on Thursday, November 26th at 12:30 PM ET.
In addition, CBS has some compelling and riveting early afternoon, 1:00 PM, ET games too: Giants vs. Bears in Week 2 (9/20), Ravens vs. Eagles in Week 6 (10/18) & Steelers vs. Ravens in Week 7 (10/25).

a really early announcer prediction but I see Jim Nantz and Tony Romo doing Browns Ravens Week 1
ReplyDeleteYeah with the matchup between Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield on tap ... that's a great game for CBS to send them to. Week 1 for CBS looks sh*tty (yeah, I cursed) overall.

I would be very surprised if Jim Nantz calls a game in Week 10. The Masters takes place during from November 12 up through that Sunday (November 15) so I would imagine that is what Jim Nantz would be calling instead.
DeleteI agree with that assessment. I figure CBS would like to get their number 4 team out there, too. I wonder if we maybe end up getting crews 2 through 4 that week but Romo pairs up with Eagle and Davis. Having the three of them in a booth together would be pretty thrilling, I must admit.
DeleteWow only 3 games for week 10
ReplyDeleteIt has something to do with the Masters or some golf event. CBS will televise it that day and anticipate it going later than what would allow them to show the early games.
DeleteProbably only local home markets will be able to get those three games
DeleteI'm guessing only certain markets will get those 4:05 games for Week 10 which is crazy

Here's CBS NFL lineup right now (subject to change) for y'all who would like to make CBS predictions leading up to NFL season:
ReplyDelete1. Jim Nantz, Tony Romo
2. Ian Eagle, Charles Davis
3. Kevin Harlan, Trent Green -- yeah, Harlan & Gumbel switched spots. Harlan gets promoted to #3, Gumbel gets demoted to #4
4. Greg Gumbel, Rich Gannon -- see above
5. Andrew Catalon, James Lofton
6. Spero Dedes, Adam Archuleta
7. Tom McCarthy, Jay Feely
8. Beth Mowins, Tiki Barber
Rich Gannon is a better analyst to me than Trent Green. He should have moved up to the 3rd spot with Kevin Harlan. They have good chemistry.
ReplyDeleteTo put it bluntly: yes, Gannon is absolutely a better analyst than Green.
DeleteI think it is interesting with Harlan and Gumbel switching places. Harlan will officially be in the top 3 for the first time since 2005. He is, in my mind, CBS' best football pbp guy hands down. It pains me a little bit that he did not move up with Rich Gannon, but the two did have a great run together for 3 years from 2006-08 and in the last six years. Personally I have not found any appeal to Trent Green. Admittedly I have not heard him call many games, but from what I have heard from him I find him to be very bland and straight up boring; I have found his analysis to be very generic and that makes me question why he would be their number 3 analyst and question CBS' sanity when he was being considered to move up to the number two spot. Gannon worked super well with Harlan, provided excellent analysis, and what I loved is that he always had a good eye for key blocks on a play for offense. I do think Gumbel is one of the best pbp guys in the sport (I am upset CBS switched him out from being their number 1 guy after 2003) but he is in his 70s; his capability of calling a game is not what it once was. What are other people's thoughts on the move?
ReplyDeleteDoes sideline reporters move around any?
ReplyDeleteNot sure how much involvement sideline reporters will have yet.

More than likely Tracy Wolfson, Evan Washburn, and Melanie Collins will be the 3 main sideline reporters. I do think they’ll use Jay Feely, Amanda Balionis, John Schiffereh, and AJ Ross. I think they’ll have reporters during the season like the last several seasons. I could be wrong though.
ReplyDeleteWill the NFL season be cancelled this year? This concerns me and a whole host of people in my family. What does everyone else think?
ReplyDeleteI think if they were going to cancel it they would done it by now
DeleteThanks for your input! I certainly hope you are right. I just hope at the last second they do not pull out.

I feel like the Browns vs Ravens is the main game in week 1 on CBS. I'm surprised that Nantz and Romo wasn't assigned to call that game.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree, I think the people at CBS may be hoping for Tua vs. Cam... I don't think Tua will be playing but it may be the only chance they get to really show Cam to a large audience if the Patriots fizzle out soon after.
DeleteI do not agree at all. Oh boy, another year where we wonder if rhe Browns turn it around; ho-hum. The Dolphins-Patriots game in the post Tom Brady era is the matchup I want to see WAY over the gross Cle-Bal game.
Delete38-6. Yep, CBS definitely should have had the Browns-Ravens match up as their main game.
DeleteI think Rich Gannon is a better analyst than Trent Green. He should be the number 3 analyst paired up with Kevin Harlan.
ReplyDeleteTrent Green MAYBE is good enough to be CBS' number 6 color guy, but if if I were in charge I would can him for someone better. He is very bland and has hardly any emotion. I guess Harlan can kind of cover for that, but I would rather see Harlan with someone awesome like Gannon.
DeleteWhat markets will get those 4:05pm Week 10 games on Masters Sunday
ReplyDeleteI figure CBS will treat it like any other singlegeader week: the whole country will see one game. There has never been such an occurance in recent memory but over the last handful of years there have been instances of Fox just showing noon games so their MLB coverage can be on display. I do not see any reason at this point why only certain markets should get games. I think the Masters should already be wrapped up by then.
DeleteThat would be up to the league and the station I would assume

So glad to see CBS is using their same scoreboard that they have been using since Super Bowl 50/the 2016 season. I do not like how these networks switch up their scoreboards too much; if it's a good one, just use it for six or seven years. Good for CBS on this one.

CBS should consider flexing out Giants at Cowboys week 5. Giants could beat the 49ers next week who are depleted. They could enter that game winless but this game has blowout potential. Either Vegas KC or Buffalo Tennessee would be a great replacement but probably not going to happen since the Cowgirls are the ratings darlings and have to be in the national games as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteI could see Bills vs Titans moving to 4:25 & Giants vs Cowboys moved to 1:00.
DeleteNow that Saquon Barkley is officially out for the season with a torn ACL for the NY Giants, I really think the NFL should flex out in week 5 Giants at Cowboys in the 325/425 slot and replace it with Bills at the Tennessee Titans who are both 2-0 as we speak. Giants are going to struggle now without Saquon Barkley but the NFL will do everything in its power to keep the Cowboys in every national game they can because they are the ratings darlings.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely
DeleteI could actually see BUF-TEN flexed into primetime. What do you think Tamir?

The NFL really needs to step up and flex out Giants vs Cowboys week 5 in the 425 slot on CBS. I am sorry but no one wants to see the embarrassing Giants on national TV get embarrassed by the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls deserve less national games and hopefully the NFL kicks them out of this spot. Giants are very likely going to lose to an angry LA Rams team next week and go into week 5 winless. I say Bills at Titans or Chiefs at Raiders would be a great replacement. Please please NFL flex this game out.

The Steelers Titans game is being rescheduled to Monday or Tuesday. I’m not sure what game will be aired instead of that one in my area.
ReplyDeleteSteelers vs. Titans will be postponed to Monday or Tuesday night
ReplyDeleteI expect the announcers to remain the same
BTW Steelers at Titans in Week 4 is no longer 1PM Sunday either Monday or Tuesday night now
ReplyDeleteAlso on your schedule the Broncos at Patriots as stupid a move as it is has been flexed from 1 to 4:25PM Sunday, October 11th

Patriots Chiefs has been postponed till monday or tuesday
ReplyDeleteColts Bears has been flexed to 4:25
ReplyDeleteThe Week 4 circus continues. Patriots vs. Chiefs is getting postponed to later this week (which could change of course) and Colts vs. Bears will now be played at 4:25.
ReplyDeleteColts vs Bears game is moved to 4:25pm this Sunday to replace the postponed Cheifs vs Patriots game due to Cam Newton tested positive for for the Covid-19.
ReplyDeleteThe Patriots and Chiefs game is canceled due to several Patriots players catching Covid-19 and the Colts Bears game got flexed to 4:25pm tomorrow
ReplyDeleteChiefs vs. Patriots also won't be played tomorrow. Could be rescheduled to Monday or Tuesday night.
ReplyDeleteAnother Week 4 game has been postponed: Patriots/Chiefs, to either Monday or Tuesday.
ReplyDeletePatriots-Chiefs game was postponed tomorrow due to Cam Newton testing positive for Covid-19. So in replacement the Colts-Bears game has been put in place of that game starting at 4:25pm eastern. I can assume the announcers would stay the same
ReplyDeleteI’ve got another correction for you this has been a tough week for you I know with this channel’s original schedule however in the late window later today the Patriots at Chiefs game’s been postponed and as a result of that the Colts at Bears game’s been moved to 4:25 from the originally scheduled start time of 1PM

The titans had 2 straight days of no positive tests for Covid. Great news. So the facility most likely will be open tomorrow. Let's just go hope that the rest of the season goes smooth and we have games scheduled on the day it's suooose to happen. The titans and pats situation really screwed up the week 4 schedule. So far week 5 is looking good.

It's crazy that most of the country has to watch the 0-4 Giants against the 1-3 Cowboys over the Colts and Browns who are both 3-1, but it's all about ratings.
ReplyDeleteAt least it was a good game, but yeah, too bad they had to show that one. Unfortunately if everyone in that division plays poorly it will be competitive, then the networks will have real excuses to actually showcase those games.

CBS' best and most distributed game was Pit-Ten. Their late window was basically split with NE-SF and KC-Den (with a few folks seeing the Jags and LAC going at it). Up until the mid-2000s, it was far from rare for the networks with afternoon games to have their number one crew call a noon game even if they had the double-header (I figure that this was because flexing games did not start until 2006 and so if a network had their best game at noon they were stuck with it there). Now it seems you never see that. The only times in recent memory I recall with a number one crew calling a noon game was 2016 week 16 Vikings-Packers at noon while most of the country saw with either TB-NO (I think it was NO) or Ari-Sea and a week 17 game on CBS (I think in 2017) featuring NYJ-NE dominating the early window while multiple regional games were showcases later in the doubleheader.

Texans/Jaguars: Spero Dedes, Adam Archuleta, A.J. Ross
4:25/3:25 kickoffs:
Steelers/Cowboys: Jim Nantz, Tony Romo, Tracy Wolfson (already confirmed)
Dolphins/Cardinals: Kevin Harlan, Trent Green, Melanie Collins
Seahawks/Bills is still my cross-flex prediction should such an event happen (I don't see SEA-BUF being flexed to SNF because the Seahawks already have three appearances on Sunday Night).

According to NFL broadcast rules, Seahawks/Rams and Chargers/Dolphins can't air on the same network, because the Chargers and Rams are located in the same city, that is Los Angeles.

The CBS network is not only a good network to have NFL games on but also good to watch NFL football. Such a demoralizong year this has been but at least our friends at CBS (and the players, too) can lift our sagged spirits towards higher heights of goodness.

I put Eagle/Davis on PIT @ JAX cuz Steelers are 8-0 and have been drawing very high ratings this season plus Davis resides in Windermere, Florida.
I put Harlan/Green on NE @ HOU cuz Patriots seem to get decent ratings win or lose
I put Gumbel/Gannon on MIA @ DEN cuz Miami is playing very well in their last 7 games.
I put Catalon/Lofton on NYJ @ LAC due to POE. Plus, Lofton resides in San Diego, California.
I put Dedes/Archuleta on CIN @ WAS cuz Dedes is from the New Jersey area.

I put Nantz/Romo on KC/MIA for obvious reasons.
I put Eagle/Davis on IND/LV cuz this is CBS' 2nd best matchup of the day.
I put Harlan/Green on DEN/CAR cuz they've called a lot of Broncos games this season.
I put Gumbel/Gannon on HOU/CHI due to POE.
I put Dedes/Archuleta on NYJ/SEA cuz Archuleta resides in Murray, Utah.
I put Catalon/Lofton on TEN/JAX cuz they've called a lot of Jaguars games this season.
For anyone who was wondering: yes, the entire country will get a game this week from CBS, despite them only having the late slots for a single header. Some people on this chat were speculating if that would be the case or if games would only be shown locally. Well, we all get a game.

I put Eagle/Davis for LAC/BUF cuz Eagle resides in Essex Falls, New Jersey.
I put Harlan/Green on LV/ATL cuz this isn't a bad matchup and both teams are playing pretty well as of late.
I put Gumbel/Gannon on CLE/JAX cuz CBS says that they are the #4 team on the site; however, I have the sense that CBS is treating them like the #5 team ever since Week 3 of the season plus, Gumbel resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
I put Catalon/Lofton on MIA/NYJ due to POE.
I put Dedes/Archuleta on TEN/IND cuz this is expected to be a good game and this crew has been assigned to 6 of their 7 game assignments have turned out to be good games (Note: 2 of the games I am referencing involve the Colts).

CBS' Week 12 schedule is rather loaded: all the early games feature a team in the thick of things for the AFC playoffs. The Raiders (vs Atl), Bills (vs LAC), Browns (vs Jac), and Dolphins (vs NYJ) all are real playoff contenders. And the Titans and Colts matchup has huge implications for both teams. Of course, the Chiefs-Bucs game in the late game window features two teams that are both arguably heavy-weights.
