With the 2026-27 NHL season set to begin next week, ESPN has announced its complete on-air NHL broadcast lineup, with a nice mix of experienced commentators, Stanley Cup champions, Olympic gold medalists, and respected reporters for live coverage across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, Hulu, ESPN+, and Disney+.
ESPN’s broadcast team is led by play-by-play commentators Sean McDonough (a veteran of three Stanley Cup Finals), Bob Wischusen, & Mike Monaco. Each commentator will take the lead for big-time games and important functions throughout the season. Joining them are analyst Ray Ferraro, who spent 18 seasons in the NHL and played over 1,200 games, and insider/reporter Emily Kaplan, who is starting her 10th season of covering the NHL for ESPN.
The well-regarded ESPN studio team, for the sixth straight season, will consist of veteran host Steve Levy, entering his 34th year with the network; six-time Stanley Cup champion and analyst Mark Messier; and 13-year NHL veteran and fellow analyst P.K. Subban. Levy, Messier, and Subban will be handling pregame, intermission, and postgame coverage throughout the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Furthermore, set to continue their game and studio analyst roles under new agreements are Erik Johnson and T.J. Oshie. Johnson was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2006 NHL Draft and won the 2022 Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche. Oshie won a Stanley Cup in 2018 with the Washington Capitals. Both commentators started with ESPN last year and will remain a regular part of ESPN’s NHL coverage.

ESPN’s NHL game broadcasters provide the soundtrack to their extensive NHL coverage throughout the 2026-27 season, including Opening Night, Frozen Frenzy, ABC Hockey Saturday, All-Star Weekend, Stadium Series, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The 2026-27 NHL regular season starts on Tuesday, September 29 with a tripleheader of games on ESPN and the ESPN App. At 5:00 PM ET, the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes host the Florida Panthers, with Bob Wischusen (play-by-play), Erik Johnson (analyst) & Leah Hextall (reporter). Live coverage continues at 8:00 PM ET when the New York Rangers play the Boston Bruins in an Original Six game, with Sean McDonough (play-by-play), Ray Ferraro (analyst) & Emily Kaplan (insider/reporter) providing commentary. The nightcap begins at 10:30 PM ET as the Chicago Blackhawks square off against the Vegas Golden Knights with Mike Monaco (play-by-play), Kevin Weekes (analyst) & Stormy Buonantony (reporter) on-site in Las Vegas.
