On Thursday afternoon, ESPN jointly alongside the NBA, announced the blockbuster broadcast schedule for the 2023-24 NBA regular season. The schedule encompasses 24 games on ABC, including NBA Christmas Day, NBA Saturday Primetime & ABC Sunday Showcase (plus the late addition of five Wednesday games in January and the first-ever In-Season Tournament championship).
Generally, NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC games starts at 8:30 p.m. (ET) and is preceded by NBA Countdown at 8 p.m. (ET). For ABC Sunday Showcase games, games typically take place at 1 p.m. (ET) and 3:30 p.m. (ET) (sans the season premiere), and is preceded by NBA Countdown at 12:30 p.m. (ET).
ABC begins their 22nd season televising NBA basketball with a Christmas Day doubleheader on Monday, December 25. Nikola Jokić and the defending champion Denver Nuggets host Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors at 2:30 p.m. (ET). Jokić and Curry are the last two NBA Finals MVP's. Then, LeBron James plays in his 18th Christmas game as the Los Angeles Lakers plays host to Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics at 5 p.m. (ET). The Celtics & Lakers will play on Christmas Day for the first time since 2008 as the sport's most recognizable rivalry is renewed again.
NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC returns for the ninth straight season featuring the league's brightest stars and most compelling matchups. NBA Saturday Primetime debuts on Saturday, January 27 with a special tripleheader on ABC. The nightcap has LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers visiting San Francisco to play Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors at 8:30 p.m. (ET). This year, Mike Breen (play-by-play) returns as lead play-by-play man for NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC joined by two new analysts, Doris Burke and Doc Rivers, who returns to television broadcasting following a nearly two decade long absence. Lisa Salters (reporter) returns as the sideline reporter.
Then, on Super Bowl Sunday (Sunday, February 11), ABC Sunday Showcase is back with a Eastern Conference matchup as Bam Adebayo and the Miami Heat host Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics at 2 p.m. (ET). This season, Ryan Ruocco (play-by-play), Richard Jefferson (analyst) & JJ Redick (analyst) serve as the broadcast team for the ABC Sunday Showcase.
Malika Andrews will be the new host of NBA Countdown on ABC this season (replacing Mike Greenberg). Andrews will be joined for the ABC Countdown shows by analysts Stephen A. Smith, Michael Wilbon and newcomer Bob Myers (the former Golden State general manager). Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN's senior NBA insider, will appear regularly on the show as well.

Why are they stopping ABC so early?
ReplyDelete@Mark T. Mark, the reason why ABC is stopping NBA broadcasts past Sunday, March 17, is mainly the NCAA tournament (the NBA typically wants to avoid the NCAA Tournament as much as possible) as I looked at ABC's upcoming event schedule, and they have the NCAA Women's Tournament games the last two weekends of March (March 23-March 24 and March 30-March 31), plus NHL games. So either ABC is preoccupied with other events or wants to avoid direct competition with the NCAA Tournament. Mark, I'm not sure if you agree with me on this, but MORE NBA games NEED to be placed on ABC (~ 15-20 regular season games isn't enough in my opinion, when NBC had the NBA package back in the '90's and early 2000's, I think they aired around 35-40 games a season and they aired regular season games during the NCAA tournament (so that's not a excuse whatsoever).
DeleteFor example, let's look at Sunday, March 22, 1998:
- NBA:
Sunday 3/22:
Jazz-Knicks, 12:30, NBC regional. Tom Hammond, Steve Jones, Bill Walton, Ahmad Rashad
Hawks-Pistons, 12:30, NBC regional. Mike Breen, Matt Guokas, Isiah Thomas, Jim Gray
- NCAA basketball:Sun 3/22 (regional finals)
3 Stanford vs 8 Rhode Island (at St. Louis), CBS, 2:30 pm, Tim Brando, Al McGuire, Craig James
2 Kentucky vs 1 Duke (at St. Petersburg), CBS, 5 pm, Jim Nantz, Billy Packer, Michele Tafoya
NBC aired NBA games on this particular Sunday afternoon while NCAA tournament games (in this case, the regional finals were taking place), so don't tell me that ABC can't do the exact same thing. Just sayin'. ABC has MORE THAN ENOUGH time in its weekend schedule to air at least 30-35 NBA games during the regular season. I understand that ABC has to air other sporting events, but just give the NBA a bit more priority.
I agree. Especially because not everyone can get ESPN. That's also why I feel that MNF should be only on ABC.

So what will they do with JJ Redick's place now that he's coaching the Lakers?
ReplyDelete@Mark T. Mark, ESPN/ABC basically has two options to fill JJ Redick's place here in my opinion. One, promote from within. This would mean promoting current #2 analyst Richard Jefferson to the #1 broadcast team and everyone else (Hubie Brown, Bob Myers, Stephanie White, etc.) would move up one spot in the pecking order. Two, they could hire a new analyst altogether from the outside (I would love to see Andre Iguodala, Danny Green, Austin Rivers, or maybe Udonis Haslem get a crack if ESPN chooses this route). We'll see.
DeleteHmmm. I'd like to see Iguodala get a chance at broadcasting.
