- A special Thank You! as we conclude our weekly NFL on CBS articles for the 2024 season!
Hi again, everyone and Happy New Year! I'm so grateful to begin yet another year writing blog articles for TamirMoore.com. 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of this website, and I thank you so much for the support that you have provided throughout the years. (A special article about this exciting milestone will be written in the springtime.)
In the meanwhile, welcome into the final NFL on CBS: Field Pass article of the 2024 regular season! I began writing weekly Field Pass articles for the NFL on CBS this season as a nice way to document the NFL action that CBS televises every week. And now, we have hit Week #18 (otherwise known as the final week of the regular season), meaning that we have one more Field Pass to construct before we put this on hiatus until next season.
This Sunday, January 5, CBS will be airing a doubleheader during the final day of the 2024 regular season. Six games are set to be on the network's schedule for that day. To begin the afternoon at 1:00 PM ET, we have the following games scheduled: Panthers at Falcons, Giants at Eagles, Bills at Patriots, Texans at Titans. Later in the day, the following matchups are assigned 4:25 PM ET start times: Chiefs at Broncos and Chargers at Raiders.
As you read through the Week 18 NFL on CBS: Field Pass, several imperative things that you guys deeply care about will be explored in greater detail, including this week's NFL on CBS broadcast schedule, announcer assignments and distribution splits.
With that in mind, let's break down the Week 18 NFL on CBS broadcast schedule for Sunday, January 5, 2025 (subject to change):
Pregame: "The NFL Today presented by RAM Trucks" - 12:00 PM ET:
Before CBS gets into the Sunday Week 18 doubleheader action, the network heads to the New York City studios for the regular season finale edition of "The NFL Today presented by RAM Trucks", beginning at 12:00 PM ET on CBS. Veteran host James Brown serves as the host of the program, working alongside a talented cast of studio analysts, with these guys being NFL wide receiver and current CBS Mornings co-host Nate Burleson, 2016 NFL MVP Matt Ryan, three-time Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt and Hall of Famer head coach Bill Cowher. In addition that aforementioned studio lineup, lead CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones joins the program to provide the latest news and information from around the National Football League.
"The NFL Today" encompasses pregame commentary, featuring interviews with important NFL newsmakers, predictions for Sunday's games, and much more.
NFL on CBS Doubleheader: Game 1 - 1:00 PM ET (Panthers at Falcons, Giants at Eagles, Bills at Patriots & Texans at Titans):
The Week 18 NFL on CBS Sunday doubleheader commenced at 1:00 PM ET on CBS. CBS will split four matchups across the country during that particular window, with these matchups including - Panthers at Falcons (53% of Markets), Bills at Patriots (24% of Markets), Giants at Eagles (15% of Markets) and Texans at Titans (8% of Markets). I will give you a game preview for each of the four early CBS games, starting with the Panthers-Falcons game and going from there.
Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers (4-12) tried to sabotage the potential trip to the playoffs for Drake London and the middling Atlanta Falcons (8-8) on Sunday, January 5 at 1:00 PM ET on CBS. Atlanta squandered a golden opportunity to stay in front of the NFC South with a heartbreaking 30-24 loss to the Washington Commanders last week on "Sunday Night Football". That coupled with a 48-14 win by the Buccaneers over the Panthers means that Atlanta now finds themselves in a perilous position entering the week of the season. The Falcons require a win and a Tampa Bay loss (to New Orleans) to win their first NFC South championship since 2016 and earn their first postseason berth since the 2017 season. Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. (rookie) threw for 223 yards in his first primetime start last week vs. the Commanders, registering his first-ever touchdown pass in the game. Falcons RB Bijan Robinson had 90 yards rushing and two scores on the ground in last week's Falcons loss to Washington. 🎙 Sunday's Panthers-Falcons divisional matchup will be televised by CBS, as Ian Eagle handles play-by-play duties alongside analyst Charles Davis and reporter Evan Washburn.
Dorian Williams and the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills (13-3) look to finish up the 2024 regular season on a strong note against Kendrick Bourne and the New England Patriots (3-13) on Sunday, January 5 at 1:00 PM ET on CBS. The Bills are locked into the #2 seed in the AFC, so Buffalo is using this game as a chance to enter the postseason with momentum on their side. The Bills have won three straight games entering Week 18, following last week's dominant 40-14 win over the Jets. Since the 2020 season, the Bills have compiled a 24-5 record vs. the AFC East, tied for the best record against divisional opponents during this period (Chiefs, .828). The Bills are matching up with the Patriots twice in a three-week span for the first time since the 1998 season. Bills QB Josh Allen has thrown 28 touchdown passes this season, as Allen makes his case for the NFL's MVP award in 2024. 🎙 Play-by-play announcer Spero Dedes, analyst and former NFL safety Adam Archuleta and sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala team up for Sunday's Bills at Patriots broadcast on CBS.
Two teams on the opposite sides of the NFC East equation clash on the final week of the regular season as Kayvon Thibodeaux and the New York Giants (3-13) take on Quinyon Mitchell and the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles (13-3) on Sunday, January 5 at 1:00 PM ET on CBS. The Eagles are locked into the #2 seed in the NFC, so this game has no bearing whatsoever on postseason seeding. Last week, the Eagles crushed the Cowboys 41-7 at Lincoln Financial Field to claim the franchise's second NFC East title in the last three seasons. Sunday's matchup will be the 180th all-time meeting between the Eagles & Giants, with the Eagles holding the series advantage 91-86-2. Eagles RB Saquon Barkley is having a special season in 2024, becoming the ninth player in NFL history to run for at least 2,000 yards during a single season. Eagles S C.J. Gardner-Johnson leads the team with six interceptions. 🎙 CBS will regionally televise Sunday's Giants at Eagles NFC East battle, featuring play-by-play announcer Andrew Catalon, analyst and three-time Pro Bowl running back Tiki Barber, analyst and Super Bowl champion Jason McCourty, and sideline reporter AJ Ross.
Will Anderson Jr. and the AFC South champion Houston Texans (9-7) hit the road for the final week of the 2024 regular season to play Calvin Ridley and the Tennessee Titans (3-13) on Sunday, January 5 at 1:00 PM ET on CBS. As you guys probably know, the Texans are locked into the #4 seed in the AFC as a division winner, meaning that Houston will begin their postseason next weekend with a home game during Wild Card Weekend. With a victory on Sunday, Houston can get ten wins for the sixth time in franchise history. Assuming he plays, Texans RB Joe Mixon needs just seven rushing yards to reach 1,000 rushing yards for the fifth time in his career, joining Ravens RB Derrick Henry as the only two active running backs to accomplish this feat in five or more seasons. 🎙 Play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy joins analyst and former NFL offensive lineman Ross Tucker, analyst and former NFL kicker Jay Feely, and sideline reporter Amanda Balionis for Sunday's Texans at Titans game broadcast on CBS.
NFL on CBS Doubleheader: Game 2 - 4:25 PM ET (Chiefs at Broncos, Chargers at Raiders):
CBS restarts live coverage of the Week 18 Sunday doubleheader with the arrival of the late afternoon contests at 4:25 PM ET on CBS. Viewers will procure one of two AFC West rivalry games as the late doubleheader game. The Chiefs at Broncos (92% of the Markets) game will air in most of the country with select audiences seeing the Chargers at Raiders (8% of Markets) game. Additional details about Chiefs-Broncos and Chargers-Raiders will be coming your way in just a moment.
Carson Wentz and the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs (15-1) go inside the AFC West for this regular season finale against Patrick Surtain II and the Denver Broncos (9-7), who can clinch their first postseason berth since 2015 with a victory, on Sunday, January 5 at 4:25 PM ET on CBS. Kansas City is planning to rest several key people for this game, including QB Patrick Mahomes, S Justin Reid & DT Chris Jones, seeing that Kansas City already clinched the #1 seed in the AFC & home-field advantage throughout the postseason. Meanwhile, Denver has one more opportunity to lock down the final Wild Card spot in the AFC following last week's tough 30-24 loss to the Bengals in overtime. And now, the Broncos must realize that a WIN this week is the most important thing. If Denver fails to win on Sunday, that opens the door for the Bengals (a win + loss by DEN + loss by MIA) & for the Dolphins (a win + loss by CIN + loss by DEN) to grab the final Wild Card spot instead. Broncos WR Courtland Sutton caught a touchdown pass last week vs. Cincinnati. Broncos CB Riley Moss made a impact with 14 tackles in the Week 17 loss to the Bengals. 🎙 CBS will nationally televise Sunday's Chiefs at Broncos game, with the lead announcing team of Jim Nantz (play-by-play), Tony Romo (analyst) and Tracy Wolfson (reporter) scheduled to provide game commentary.
Denzel Perryman and the playoff bound Los Angeles Chargers (10-6) are set to play one regular season game before turning their attention towards the playoffs with this AFC West matchup against Tre'von Moehrig and the Las Vegas Raiders (4-12) on Sunday, January 5 at 4:25 PM ET on CBS. To put it simply, the Chargers are already in the playoffs, but are playing for seeding (as Los Angeles will be the #5 seed or the #6 seed in the AFC when the playoffs begin next week). Chargers WR Ladd McConkey (rookie) set team single-season rookie records in catches (77) and yards (1,054). Chargers S and 2024 Pro Bowler Derwin James Jr. had important fourth-down sacks in the Chargers' 40-7 playoff-clinching win over the Patriots last Saturday. Chargers QB Justin Herbert reached 20,747 career passing yards last week vs. New England, the most by any player in history through five years. 🎙 Sunday's Chargers at Raiders AFC West battle will be seen on CBS, with play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan, analyst and former NFL quarterback Trent Green, and sideline reporter Melanie Collins.
Postgame: "The NFL Today Postgame" - 7:30 PM ET:
As a special treat to NFL on CBS audiences, CBS will be airing a super rare doubleheader postgame show,"The NFL Today Postgame", at 7:30 PM ET following Chiefs-Broncos or Chargers-Raiders (depending on which game your local market game is getting). It is important to note that this program will be directly leading into CBS's coverage of the Golden Globes, which will begin at 8:00 PM ET (immediately following the postgame).
The crew of the "The NFL Today" will be tasked with hosting this postgame program including James Brown, Nate Burleson, Matt Ryan, Bill Cowher, JJ Watt and Jonathan Jones.
